Reverend Monsignor Daniel E. Fagan

Reverend Monsignor Daniel E. Fagan, 64, died on April 25, 2000. Born in Lloyd Harbor to the late Daniel and Mary O'Leary Fagan, Msgr. Fagan received his early education in Lloyd Harbor and at St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay. He later attended Cathedral College, Brooklyn, and in 1955, entered the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. He was ordained for the Diocese of Rockville Centre on June 3, 1961 by Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg. He later earned a master's degree in education from St. John's University where he also did extensive graduate work in guidance, counseling and psychology.

Immediately after ordination, then-Father Fagan was assigned to the faculty of St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale. In 1968, he was named rector there, a position he held for 10 years. While at the minor seminary, he also assisted on weekends at St. Pius X Church in Plainview. He was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Church in Roslyn in 1978 and at Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream in 1995. In 1996, Father Fagan was named an honorary prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II with the title of Monsignor.

Over the years, Msgr. Fagan served on the diocesan commission for the sacred liturgy, music and art; the priests' advisory council; the parish boundaries committee; and the seminary admissions committee. He also participated in the diocesan mentor program for newly ordained priests and served in the Ministry to Priests. He chaired the National Catholic Education Association's seminary department and was chairman of the committee that prepared revisions of the priestly formation program for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Msgr. Fagan was a member of the American Psychological Association and had served on the Board of Directors for the Suffolk Center for Emotionally Disturbed Children.

Diagnosed last year with hemochromatosis, a genetic disease in which body organs accumulate too much iron, he underwent a liver transplant in January.

Msgr. Fagan is survived by numerous cousins here and in Ireland. A Mass of Transferral was held at Holy Name of Mary Church, Valley Stream. A Funeral Mass was also held there with Bishop James T. McHugh presiding. Burial St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington.
